Village Life & Traditions

Strumpshaw may be a small Norfolk village, but it’s certainly not short of history, character or traditions, & we’re proud that the Shoulder of Mutton plays a part in village life.

Our annual beer festival MuttonStock is a celebration of everything we love about a proper village pub. With a fantastic selection of real ales, ciders, live music & plenty of good company & food, it’s become firm favourite in The Mutton’s calendar.

The pub has its own fascinating connection to local history. A nephew of Samuel Whitbread, founder of the famous brewing company, was once the vicar at St Peter’s Church, just across the road. It’s a connection reflected in the Whitbread memorabilia you’ll find around the Mutton today.

Every Boxing Day morning, villagers gather at St Peter’s Church to take part in a tradition dating back more than 250 years. Following the wishes of local farmer William Black, who died in 1756, wheat is distributed to villagers before everyone makes their way across to the Mutton for a warming glass of mulled cider & a good catch-up.

Every January we celebrate Burns Night in Traditional Scottish Style at The Mutton. It’s become a much loved fixture in our calendar, bringing friends & neighbours together for an evening of Scottish Tradition, Haggis, Neaps & Tatties & Great company. Its one of those occasions we look forward to very year & a good excuse to get your tartan on!

Throughout the year, Strumpshaw comes alive with events including the Bank Holiday Steam Rally, the Tractor Run & the September Trosh. These occasions celebrate the village’s rural heritage & bring residents and visitors together.

One tradition particularly close to our hearts is the annual free senior citizens’ Christmas dinner, which we organise at the Mutton. It’s our opportunity to give something back to the older members of our community, bringing everyone together for a Christmas meal, good company & a little festive cheer.

We’re also proud of our involvement with the Strumpshaw Community Orchard, alongside newer traditions such as our Great Conker Championship.

Some traditions have been around for centuries, while others are only just beginning. We hope the Mutton will continue to be part of Strumpshaw’s story for many years to come.
